The Beatles’ Puzzling Plan to Buy A greek Island

Hello Beatle people;

The following is a guest post by UK journalist Jonathon Knott regarding the circumstances which surrounded the Beatles’ ill-fated intention to purchase a Greek Island back in 1967. As he describes, his research into the topic “started by attempting to locate the island that the group wanted to buy, (and finding that) unevidenced assertions are then sometimes repeated unquestioningly in other accounts, leading to narratives and supposed facts becoming entrenched that contradict each other and don’t align with the available evidence.”

Research into a moment in Beatle history in which the narrative doesn’t align with available evidence? We live for that.

Enjoy everyone. As always, we look forward to you comments. ~ KH

Smoke and Mirrors: Analyzing Authorized History

Our most recent podcast covers familiar ground: Hunter Davies’ The Beatles: The Authorized Biography, first published in 1968, with multiple editions in the decades following. This was a source I analyzed in The Beatles and the Historians, but one that Karen and I felt deserved podcast attention. In order to avoid self-plagiarizing, I decided to approach The Authorized Biography from a somewhat different angle: namely, looking at Davies’ defense of his work throughout the decades, his continued support for and promotion of the work’s key interpretations up through the present day, and The Authorized Biography’s unique status in Beatles historiography as the last major work in which all four Beatles spoke with one voice.

Better late …

A little backstory:

The first part of this podcast was taped at the Fest, in August, in Chicago. (My first ever Fest, incidentally: thanks to everyone I got to talk with and meet in person; you were all lovely). Unfortunately, there’s a decent amount of background noise. For some curious, never-explained reason, the designated podcast room was approximately 10 feet away from the Apple Jam stage. (You have not lived until you’ve heard “Yesterday” as a polka). SATB did their best to minimize the ambient sound of the bands in the background, but it’s still audible.

The second part of the discussion was taped a few weeks later, and there were, thankfully, no polka bands around in my backyard as Robert and I finished our discussion. Please enjoy listening, and let us know what you think in comments and questions.

Much appreciated,

Erin

We’re Baaack….

And no, we haven’t aged that much. (At least not Erin.) Erin and I are happy to announce the relaunch of our podcast on September 23, with a discussion of Peter Jackson’s Get Back. We intend to link future podcasts here because a) Spotify, our new platform, doesn’t allow for commentary, and b) we want to hear from you!

Stay tuned.

A little late …

Recently, an alert poster reminded me that I never posted Part III of my YouTube interview with Pop Goes the 60’s Matt Williamson. (To give you some idea of how long ago this podcast was done, Matt and I spent some time after we were done recording discussing the then upcoming Chiefs/Packers game. So … Better linked now than never?)

Comments and questions are welcomed.
